Jeff Berkley, PhD – Founder, Chairman and CEO
Jeff is well known as a leader in the fields of surgery simulation and real-time finite element modeling. He has published numerous articles and has been invited to show his computer demos and speak at a wide variety of conferences. He has published and served as a reviewer for various journals such as IEEE Transactions on Visualization and Computer Modeling, Virtual Reality, and the Electronic Journal of Haptics Research and Medical Imaging. Jeff helped found Mimic Technologies with the goal of providing the haptic technologies necessary for widespread acceptance of surgery simulation.
Jeff brings extensive experience in mathematics, engineering and healthcare with a focus on virtual reality applications. Jeff has a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of California, San Diego, where he majored in Biomedical Engineering and received minors in Chemistry and Psychology; a Master’s degree in Biomedical Engineering from Northwestern University; and a PhD in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Washington’s HIT Laboratory, one of the world’s premier virtual reality labs. Jeff also served in the Naval Reserves for eight years as a medical corpsman where he received experience in field medicine and nursing.
Rob Blanding, PhD – Vice president of Software Development
Rob joined Mimic in October of 2007. He brings over twelve years of experience in computational geometry, computer graphics, and human-computer interaction, as well as over twenty years of software development experience.
He is well known as a leader in the fields of haptics, surgery simulation, and real-time finite element modeling. He has published numerous articles and has spoken at a wide variety of academic conferences. He has published and served as a reviewer for various journals such as IEEE Transactions on Visualization and Computer Modeling, Virtual Reality, and the Electronic Journal of Haptics Research and Medical Imaging.
JAN OSTMAN, MSC, MBA – VICE PRESIDENT OF MARKETING & INTERNATIONAL SALES
Jan brings diverse experience in sales, marketing, and business development from the simulation, haptics, consulting, and automotive industry. He first joined Mimic in 2005, spearheading strategy for the firm’s robotic surgery simulation business.
Prior to joining Mimic, Jan was sales manager for haptics technology company Reachin Technologies, where he successfully grew its business in North America and Japan. Jan has held sales, business development, and engineering positions with a number of simulation and virtual reality firms and was an analyst and consultant with the Swedish Institute for Growth Policy Studies.
Jan holds a MSc in Industrial Design Engineering from Luleå University of Technology in Sweden and an MBA with Honors from the University of Washington.
Glenn Carstater, MBA – Vice President of Domestic Sales
Glenn joined Mimic in September 2011. Glenn brings over 23 years of global, strategic sales experience from such Fortune 500 companies as Dell, AT&T and MCI (now Verizon Communications) where he sold complex information technology products, services and solutions to both federal and commercial clients.
Glenn earned a Bachelor of Science Degree from the University of California, San Diego where he majored in Management Science. Glenn earned an MBA from George Mason University with a specialization in Finance.
Bruce Michels – Vice President of Finance & Operations
Bruce brings decades of senior executive leadership experience combined with hands-on involvement and mentoring in a number of closely held businesses. He is recognized for his outstanding practical knowledge in finance, strategic planning, operations, and organizational development, obtained through leadership positions in diverse industries such as financial services, management consulting, telecom, manufacturing, and technology. He has served as President, Chief Operating Officer, Senior VP, International Operations Manager, and Sales Executive in organizations ranging from start-up to Fortune 500, including Management Skills LLC, The Lucks Company, Alexander Hutton, Telecalc, Fluke Corporation, and Xerox.
Bruce is a retired Navy Captain, a certified management consultant, and has authored several publications and articles on business management principles. Bruce earned a Bachelor of Science Degree from the University of Minnesota, and an MBA with a specialization in International Business from the University of Washington.
Seahak Kim, PhD – Director of Electronics Development
Seahak obtained his PhD at the Tokyo Institute of Technology and is a recognized expert on tension based haptic devices. At Mimic, he developed a hardware platform that is now one of Mimic’s core technologies. Seahak has led hardware development for several government and business clients, and is an inventor with two published and several pending patent. Seahak has authored numerous articles and papers related to tension-based haptics for publication in peer reviewed journals.
Seahak received his Bachelor of Science degree in Control and Instrumentation Engineering from Chosun University in Korea; a Master’s degree from Aichi Institute of Technology at Toyota and a Ph.D degree from the Tokyo Institute of Technology.
David Lopata – Director of Product Design
David joined Mimic in November of 2008. He brings over 12 years’ experience in design engineering and product development and nearly 20 years’ experience in the production and manufacturing. His previous endeavors range from system and component level design for the automotive aftermarket, design and manufacturing of high end coating delivery products, to design and manufacturing of heavy construction equipment. At Mimic, David managed the production and customer service departments before taking over responsibility for product design.
Todd Larson, RN, BSN, MSIT, CNOR – Director, Mimic Medical Education and Development
Following his 23-year service in the U.S. Navy, Todd was the Program Manager and Nursing Supervisor for the Telerobotics & Advanced Minimally Invasive Surgery Program at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, MD. He oversaw all information and robotic technology related projects, and as the Program Administrator for the Minimally Invasive Surgery Fellowship Program, he directed planning and implementation of critical training technology for Walter Reed.
While serving on active duty in the Navy, Todd served in a variety of leadership roles including as Business Manager for Operative Care Services at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, MD, and serving as the Division Officer for Surgical and Ancillary Services onboard the USNS Comfort TAH- 20 during the 9-11 disaster and in support of Operation Noble Eagle and Operation Iraqi Freedom.
Eric Hagen – Director of Purchasing & Production
Eric Hagen serves as Mimic’s Director of Purchasing and Production. He is responsible for the purchasing of all of Mimic’s production materials and equipment. Eric joined Mimic in June 2011, bringing with him over 20 years of experience in the Procurement field and Production ranging from production materials and equipment to service contracting. He has held various titles within the Purchasing field, ranging from defense contracting to private industry. At Mimic, Eric managed the purchasing and production departments, before being promoted to Director.
